James Farrer began making and repairing buffs and glazers at 12 Turner Street Sheffield in 1866. He moved to a house with a shop attached at 57 Cambridge Street, moving to Cambridge Street in 1880 as the business continued to expand. After his death in 1894 his widow entered into a partnership with James E Farrer as James Farrer and Sons, later (1909) becoming a private limited company. By 1909 the firm has premises and workshops on each side of Burgess Street, in Wellington Street, and in Barker's Pool, besides timber stores in Balm Green. Soon after 1909 business was centralised into the former works of Manuels Furniture Manufacturers at Devonshire Works, Division Street. Dimensions approx. 51 x 75 cm.
